NAVFAC SW Tasks GeomorphIS Team to Conduct 2019 Avian Surveys on MCAS Camp Pendleton

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest (NAVFAC SW) has issued GeomorphIS a task order under our 5-year IDIQ to conduct 2019 avian surveys on Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton (MCAS CP), California. GeomorphIS will use our long-time partner, the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM) to conduct the presence/absence surveys, nest monitoring, and nestling color banding for both the Least Bell’s Vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus) and Southwestern Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) occurring within the riparian areas of MCAS CP. The surveys will be conducted in accordance with conditions set forth in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Biological Opinion (1-6-95-F-02) dated October 1995 for Programmatic Activities and Plans in Riparian and Estuarine/Beach Ecosystems on Marine Corps Air Station, Camp Pendleton. Subsequent to the field survey, the GeomorphIS/SDNHM team will submit a final report and GIS database containing the results of the survey.

GeomorphIS Team to Conduct Mexican Spotted Owl Surveys on Coronado NF

The USDA Forest Service has contracted with the GeomorphIS-BIOME, Ecological & Wildlife Research team to conduct 2019 Mexican spotted owl (Strix occidentalis lucida) surveys at several locations within the Coronado National Forest (CNF), Arizona. Survey sites are in the Galiuro Mountains, Catalina Mountains, Chiricahua Mountains, and Dragoon Mountains, in the southern part of the state. Data gathered by the GeomorphIS-BIOME team will help the CNF to protect this species during restoration projects. Formal surveys were completed in the mountain range for the first time in 2017 and 2018 in more than 20 years, and the intent in 2019 is to continue this
effort. Based on the results of the 2019 surveys, GeomorphIS-BIOME will assist USFS staff with re-drawing protected activity center (PAC) boundaries and investigating inventory areas based on potentially suitable habitat.

OC Parks Hires GeomorphIS to Prepare Wildland Fire Management Plan

The Orange County parks department (OC Parks) has hired GeomorphIS to prepare a Wildland Fire Management Plan (WFMP) for the Irvine Regional Park located in Orange County, California. GeomorphIS fire planners and ecologists will research the conditions of the study area, conduct a wildfire risk assessment and analysis, coordinate with cooperating agencies and stakeholders, and develop the WFMP. The results of this study and the report format will serve as a guide for developing WFMPs for other facilities managed by OC Parks.
